A diamond in the rough, that is what Andy McCormick, Director of Golf Operations at Coffee Creek Golf Course thought he had found when he played River Oaks Golf Course in 1996. “I loved the location, the piece of land and the area. All the ingredients were there for a very special golf course.” Soon Millennium Golf Properties was formed and the owners of Coffee Creek Golf Course purchased River Oaks and the polishing of the diamond began.

With their successful record of operating Coffee Creek for nine years, Millennium Golf Properties embarked on a new journey: redesigning and reopening a private golf club.

With an aerial photograph, a topographical map and lots of legwork, McCormick created a redesign that used the terrain in a more friendly way. “My main focus was to create a golf course that flows naturally through the property and is not too difficult for the beginning golfer, but is challenging enough for the average and good player. I left most of the front areas of the green open so golfers have the availability to roll their shots up onto the greens. I tried to balance out the difficult shots with more forgiving greens and short shots with more difficult greens.” McCormick put extra effort in green design and quality green construction. “The greens turned out fantastic. The gently rolling surfaces occasionally offer eye-catching undulations.”

The focus at River Oaks is on a family golf experience; whether it is couples golf on Friday evening and Sunday afternoons or parent-child events throughout the summer or the variety of men’s and women’s activities. River Oaks is a perfect match for the family-oriented golfer.

Being part of a private club is a lifestyle decision that River Oaks wants to be enjoyed by all family members. Joining a private club gives everyone the opportunity to spend more time enjoying the outdoors and doing what they love, play golf. Our job at River Oaks is to create an atmosphere that promotes family participation.

The formula at River Oaks appears to be working. Starting with zero members in January, River Oaks now has over 350 families and still growing. “The golf course is important but it is our members, programs, activities and staff that will make the difference in the long run. We are looking forward to making River Oaks as best as possible.”
